I am Running Across America for Wilderness Therapy
My name is David Chandler and I am 26 years old. I’ve been running for the past seven years anything from one mile races to 50 miles, Spartan races, and doing my own challenging trail runs. Running has always been a way for me to learn about myself and what I am capable of. I decided to attempt this run across America so that I can test myself. As well, I will be raising money for Sky’s the Limit Fund – a non profit organization dedicated to helping youth in crisis with financial need get to wilderness therapy.
The plan is to run from Santa Monica, CA to the Atlantic ocean in NC. The dream is to finish in 110 days, my goal is 120 and realistically I will be happy to finish however long it takes. As I run I’ll be pushing a baby stroller with food, water, camping gear and everything I need. I’ll be sleeping in free campsites, hoping to get a shelter and shower from kind stranger’s, and very rarely a hotel.
After I graduated college I was unsure of what I wanted to do but knew I wanted to help others. I became a field instructor at SUWS of the Carolinas so that I could share my love of nature with the students. I worked predominantly with the 14-17 year old male drug abuse/ addiction program (Phoenix outdoors). During my years as a field instructor I saw nature teach students so many different lessons in patience, kindness, humility and so much more. SUWS of the Carolinas is the most supportive, caring, teaching, and empowering place I have ever experienced for each and every staff and student that is apart of it.
SUWS of the Carolinas is one of Sky’s the Limit Fund’s wilderness partners. All money donated to STLF through my run will be designated to help youth in crisis attend SUWS to begin their healing journey. Please help me pay it forward to kids who desperately need our help.
